How to Wash a Down Jacket and Deal With Clumped Fill

Decide whether to clean a spot, wash or seek help

Start with the jacket in front of you, not a fixed washing schedule.

• A small surface mark. Try a damp cloth first if the care instructions allow it. Craft recommends light cleaning where a full wash is unnecessary.
• Dirt throughout the jacket or reduced puffiness after wear. Check the label for washing and drying instructions. Dirt, sweat and moisture can make down clump, reducing the air it holds. Arc’teryx explains this loss of insulation.

Prepare the wash and rinse thoroughly

For machine-washable down, a front-loader is a useful starting point; avoid a top-loader with a central agitator. Craft’s guide makes that distinction.

Hand-wash-only means a different route: gently press the garment through the water without rubbing or twisting, then rinse thoroughly. Bosideng describes this handling method. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Patagonia permits a gentle detergent and also recommends a dedicated down wash, so detergent compatibility is more specific than “all ordinary detergent ruins down.” Patagonia

Dry the filling, not just the outer fabric

If tumble drying is permitted, use the label-approved setting. Patagonia recommends no-to-low heat with two or three clean tennis balls to help restore puffiness. The balls assist drying; they do not replace checking the jacket. Patagonia

Pause periodically, gently shake the jacket and redistribute clumps within the stitched compartments. Rab suggests checking every 20–30 minutes and warns that dry outer fabric can hide damp filling. Handle wet down gently. Rab

Allow several hours rather than relying on one automatic cycle. Continue until the filling is fully dry and fluffy, following the garment’s instructions. Stellar also warns that the shell can dry before the insulation. Stellar Equipment

If clumps remain, choose the next step

Try further permitted drying before another wash. Montane recommends repeating its drying steps for clumped filling, then restarting the cleaning process if that does not resolve it. This does not establish a universal two-wash recovery recipe. Montane

If correct care still leaves hard clumps, or you find damaged seams, pause and ask the manufacturer to assess the jacket. Do not use a fixed drying time as a diagnosis of permanent damage or a promise of recovery.

If the jacket is dry and puffy but still insufficient for your intended conditions, the next question is selection: what fill power and jacket construction tell you about warmth.

Store it dry, with room to expand

Hang the completely dry jacket or lay it loosely in a cool, dry space. A roomy breathable garment bag is optional protection, not a way to finish drying damp fill. Odlo
